Bar crawls, cocktail rooms and late licences

Finding a bar is easy. Finding five in one night is not.

Which crawl gets the group past the club door, what a welcome shot is really worth, and where the guide goes when the second bar turns out to be dead. Reviews of the nights out you can book for tonight.

A night out in the States

The American night out splits four ways. Pick your version.

From a pedal bar through Old Town Scottsdale to an unmarked door in Manhattan and an open bar going past a skyline. Four kinds of American night, what it costs to walk into each, and which one your city does best.

Cities that stay up

Six cities that do a bar crawl better than anywhere else.

A courtyard full of mismatched furniture, a counter with six stools behind a railway station, a brass band walking the street ahead of you. Six places, and the best night we have found in each.

The five-bar night

A bar crawl is a shortcut to the part of a city that stays open.

Someone who drinks here every week picks the bars, walks you in at each one and gets the group past the door of the club at the end. That is the whole product, and it works in almost every city on this site.

Every bar crawl
The cocktail end of the night

Cocktail bars are a guided tour now, and the good rooms are small.

Twelve seats, a short menu and a bartender who tells you what is in it. Somebody who can get five people into a room like that is worth the ticket, which is why these book out first.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam starts on the water and ends in a brown café.

A boat with a bar on board is the easiest first hour anyone has invented, and they run long after dark. After that the city belongs to the brown cafés, the jenever counters and whichever club still has room for a group.

The opening hour

A boat with a bar on it

Evenings· bar on the deck· runs late

Ninety minutes of canal with a drink in your hand, which is the correct way to work out where you are before the walking starts. The covered boats run in any weather.

The drink

Jenever, gin and the Bols house

Timed entry· indoors· one cocktail

Dutch gin came first and the city still pours it. The Bols house runs on timed tickets and ends with a cocktail you mix at the counter yourself.

The night

Five bars and a club at the end

Small group· 18+· club entry

The crawls here work the Jordaan and the Red Light edges, and the guide is the reason the last stop lets fifteen strangers in together.

The cost of a round

What a night out actually costs, by the round.

Every crawl and bar tour on the site, grouped by price. The cheap end is not the bad end: some of the best nights here are a ticket and a shot.

Under $50

Ruin-bar crawls, club entry with a drink, and the standing-bar walks through central Europe and Asia.

$50–150

The long ones: open-bar boats, all-you-can-drink bar hopping, cocktail classes that come with dinner.

$150 and up

Private guides, chartered party boats and the once-a-trip night that earns it.

Busiest on the site

Tokyo

Tokyo drinks standing up, in lanes you would walk straight past.

Golden Gai, the alleys under the tracks at Shinjuku, a counter with six stools and no English on the wall. A guide here is not a luxury, it is the door.

Budapest

Budapest turned its bombed-out courtyards into the best bars in Europe.

Szimpla started it and the seventh district followed: bars built inside half-ruined tenements, furniture nobody matched on purpose, a different room every ten steps. Cheap, loud and all within a walk.

Does not travel

Three drinking traditions that never travelled.

A cocktail bar looks much the same from Berlin to Bangkok. A courtyard ruin bar, a counter for six behind a railway station and a room cut out of ice do not.

Budapest

The Ruin Bars

In the seventh district the tenements were left standing but empty after the war, and in 2002 somebody opened a bar in one rather than fix it. Szimpla Kert still has the bathtub seating and a Trabant in the middle of the room. The crawls string four or five of them together, which is the only way to see how differently each one uses the same ruin.

Shinjuku and Namba

The Izakaya Counters

An izakaya is not a pub. You order food with every round, the counter seats six or eight, and the good ones in Omoide Yokocho and Namba have no English menu and no interest in printing one. A guide orders for the table and moves the group on after two drinks, which is how three bars fit into an evening.

The Ice Bars

Everything in the room is carved from ice, including the glass the drink arrives in, and it is held at about minus five so the walls survive the night. You get a cape, a pair of gloves and roughly half an hour before your hands decide for you. Entry is timed, because only so many people fit.

Book ahead

Four nights out that will not wait for you.

Most bars need nothing but a decision and a taxi. These four run on fixed sittings, timed entry and rooms that hold twelve people, and a Friday goes weeks out.

  1. 01Alcotraz Prison Cocktail Experience in ManchesterOne cell block, one group, one sitting. When the slot is sold there is no second seating that night.
  2. 02Entry ticket to Ice Pub Prague with Nightclub OptionThe room is held below freezing and holds only so many capes at once, so entry runs on timed slots.
  3. 03Tokyo Bar Hopping Tour in Shinjuku (All-You-Can-Drink + Dinner)The counters in the Shinjuku lanes seat six or eight. Guides cap the group at whatever the bar will physically take.
  4. 04Bols Cocktail Experience Entrance ticket plus CocktailA timed ticket into the Bols house, and the evening slots are the first to go on a weekend.
Before you turn up

The door is the one part of the night you cannot argue with.

Drinking age is 21 in the United States and 18 or 20 almost everywhere else, and every guide on these tours checks it. Bring the passport rather than a photograph of it. Trainers and shorts will stop a group at club doors across most of Europe, the meeting point is usually the first bar and not a hotel, and an included shot is one shot, not a round.
